Khalid bin Sayeed

Dr. Khalid B. Sayeed was a distinguished political scientist and historian, renowned for his scholarly contributions to South Asian studies. He served as a Professor of Political Science at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, and held visiting professorships at McGill University and Duke University. His academic career also included lectureships in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, India, and at the University of Dhaka.​

Dr. Sayeed’s seminal work, Pakistan: The Formative Phase, 1857–1948, remains a definitive study of the political and social developments leading to the creation of Pakistan. First published in 1968, the book meticulously examines the factors that heightened or lowered tensions between Hindus and Muslims in the subcontinent, starting from the 1857 rebellion. It provides an in-depth analysis of key figures such as Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, Allama Iqbal, and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and explores the rise of Muslim political consciousness and the establishment of the All India Muslim League.​

In addition to this work, Dr. Sayeed authored The Political System of Pakistan (1969) and Politics in Pakistan: The Nature and Direction of Change (1980), further solidifying his status as a leading authority on Pakistan’s political history.
