Alan David Brinkley (1949-2019) was a prominent American historian known for his work on 20th-century American political history, particularly liberalism and its challenges. He taught at Harvard University and Columbia University for over two decades and served as Provost of Columbia University from 2003 to 2009. Brinkley was the author of several books, including “Voices of Protest,” a National Book Award winner, and co-author of widely used American history textbooks.
